Fasting month of Ramadan starts today

Ramazan 2018: Holy month of fasting starts in Gulf and far East countries from May 17

At a meeting on Tuesday evening, Bahrain's Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs determined Wednesday would be the 30th day of the eighth Islamic month, Sha'ban.

Recall that NAIJ.com previously reported that the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, called on Muslims all over the country to be on the lookout for the moon on the night of Wednesday, May 16, which will signal the beginning of the Ramadan fast.

The Central Moon Sighting Committees, also known as Markazi Ruet-e-Hilal Committees, have also made special arrangements to sight the new moon and decide the start of Ramadan 2018 in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In case the new moon is not sighted, then Ramadan in India will begin from May 18, Friday.

He stressed that the holy month of Ramadan is a month of mercy and forgiveness, adding that Saudi Arabia is honored to serve the two holy mosques in addition to pilgrims, visitors and Umrah performers.

Muslims across the United States will mark the start of Ramadan, a holy month that involves daily fasting and prayers, on Tuesday.

The month will end when the new moon is sighted again, with the Eid Al Fitr holiday.

Fasting Ramadan is no difference when it comes to Muslims born on the American soil and others coming from foreign countries.

They also offer more prayers, contribute more money to the poor and regularly study the Quran. According to Pew Research, 92% of U.S. Muslims who said, in a previous survey, that religion is "very important" observe Ramadan.

Grand muftis (leaders of houses of Islamic opinions) and leagues of imams across the globe yesterday declared that Ramadan, the ninth month in the lunar Hijrah calendar, starts today with all Muslim faithful commencing their month-long obligatory fasting.

Ramadan is a sombre period of spiritual reflection, daylight fasting and increased charitable behaviour for Muslims.

During the Ramadan month, Muslims dress up more conservatively and spend more time at the mosque as they are expected to detach from worldly pleasures and focus on prayers. If people break their fast during the day, they are required to make up for the lost days after Ramadan.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramzan.
