Israeli and Guatemalan officials - including the Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales - attended an inauguration ceremony at the new embassy at an office park in the contested city at the heart of the Israeli and Palestinian conflict.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the ceremony, in an office complex in west Jerusalem. He is expected to meet with his Israeli counterpart Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later in the afternoon.

Israeli troops shot dead dozens of Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border on Monday when the high-profile opening of the U.S. Embassy to Israel in Jerusalem by the administration of President Donald Trump raised tension to boiling point after weeks of anti-Israeli demonstrations. The move comes just two days after the USA opened its own embassy in the city.

Guatemala on Wednesday opened its embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the second country to do so.

Carlos Meyer, one of two Guatemalan diplomats stationed in Israel, has already moved to a new apartment in the capital's Nahlaot neighborhood. Hundreds others have also been injured by Israeli gunfire.

Mohammad Al Momani, Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and government spokesperson said, "Guatemala's decision is irresponsible and will fuel the violence in the region and encourage Israel to continue violating global law".

"This is the beginning of something extraordinary, or I would say, the re-beginning of something extraordinary, which is the relationship between Guatemala and Israel", he said. Global powers including the UK, France and Russian Federation had previously slammed the USA decision to move their embassy, while 128 nations backed a UN resolution rejecting the White House recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
