USA clothing retailer Gap has apologized Monday, May 14, 2018, for selling T-shirts with what it says was an "erroneous" map of China.

"As a responsible company, Gap Inc. strictly follows Chinese laws and rules", Gap said in the statement sent to the paper, adding that the company is committed to more rigorous reviews in the future to avoid similar incidents again.

One user on the Chinese social network Weibo complained the retailer may have intentionally left out Taiwan and other islands claimed by Beijing in the South China Sea.

United States clothes giant GAP said it was "extremely sorry" for selling a T-shirt with an "incomplete" map of China, after it was accused of being disrespectful to the country's territorial sovereignty. According to the state-owned Global Times, the map also left out southern Tibet and the South China Sea.


I can't imagine that, as a graphic designer for USA clothing giant Gap, you would have ever anticipated that part of your job would require officially apologising to the nation of China thanks to an global upset you caused with one of your shitty shirt designs.

"We sincerely apologize for this unintentional error", it said, adding that an internal inspection is being conducted to correct the mistake".

Gap Inc has apologised for selling a shirt with an incorrect map of China after photos of the shirt found in an outlet store in Canada made the rounds online.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang took note of the apology and would not say at a press briefing whether the government had complained to Gap.


In January, Australia's Qantas Airways changed its website classification of Taiwan and Hong Kong from separate countries to Chinese territories, blaming its earlier approach on an "oversight".

Fashion brand Zara and Delta Air Lines drew Beijing's ire and apologized for listing Taiwan and/or Tibet as countries on drop-down menus on their websites.

Other companies have felt compelled to apologize to the massive nation. Mercedes-Benz said sorry for quoting the Dalai Lama on social media.
