Blankenship Concedes W. Virginia Primary - Morrisey Projected Winner

West Virginia GOP Sen candidate Don Blankenship conceded Tuesday with Attorney General Patrick Morrisey taking the nomination. Blankenship's contentious campaign saw him giving Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell the moniker'Cocaine Mitch

In Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia, this year's GOP primaries were not about who could cite the most American Enterprise Institute talking points or bludgeon voters into electoral submission with the sheer tedious force of their aww-shucks family values charm.

Republicans wrapped up three crucial U.S. Senate primaries in West Virginia, Indiana and OH on Tuesday by nominating candidates who embraced President Donald Trump, while Democratic voters rejected insurgents from the left to stick with the party's mainstream.

In the race to succeed term-limited GOP Gov. John Kasich, voters set up a fall contest between Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine and Democrat Richard Cordray, who both won spirited primaries with at least 60 percent of the vote.

"Batten the hatches. It's going to be a long ride", Robert Rupp, a political history professor at West Virginia Wesleyan College, said Wednesday.

Morrisey said the general election won't be one filled with personal attacks, but claimed Manchin has become a creature of Washington. The difference in cash on hand was much greater - Manchin's campaign reported $5.3 million in his latest federal filing, compared to $835,000 for Morrisey.

The Democratic Party's core message in 2018 is simple: The Republican Party gave giant tax cuts to its superrich donors - and plans to pay for them by taking health care away from working people.

Blankenship ran a freaky campaign for months and that continued into primary day.

Trump is citing Alabama Republican Roy Moore, who lost a special Senate election after allegations of past sexual misconduct.

I'm hopeful that going forward we'll be more cautious when it comes to magical internal data that is floated into the public sphere. The GOP commands majorities in the state Senate and House of Delegates, and it controls five of six offices of the executive branch. Renacci discussed the switch "with the White House and Senate Republican officials" and said he wanted Trump's backing, which he received.

Patrick Morrisey pulled off an upset in the Republican primary for Senate, beating out coal baron Don Blankenship and Rep. Evan Jenkins to secure the GOP nomination. West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, who has broken with Democratic leadership to vote for parts of Trump's agenda, crushed Paula Jean Swearengin, who ran as a progressive alternative. "We want to congratulate David McKinley, Alex Mooney, Carol Miller and Patrick Morrisey on their nominations, and look forward to working with them all the way to November".

And while President Donald Trump emerged from the first batch of primaries with clear political victories, the same can't be said for those seeking to borrow and build on his campaign playbook. President Trump anti-endorsed Don Blankenship - who was recently released from prison - in a tweet earlier this week, drawing a rebuke from Blankenship, who described himself as "Trumpier than Trump". He said he has an "excellent" relationship with the president.

Neil Cavuto said Blankenship praised Manchin at times in the past and has not been willing to support the nominee Morrisey. That theme played out again during this year's primary campaign, when Manchin used the phrase "Washington sucks" in advertising and again in his nomination statement. "That's got to change".

Morrisey won the Senate primary with 35 percent of the vote (47,002).

Morrisey said defeating his opponents required "very, very hard" work.

Morrisey took heat from Jenkins during the primary about his New Jersey roots but doesn't expect that to be a problem in the fall campaign.

In his campaign, Morrisey, 50, has harped on his efforts as attorney general to curtail the state's opioid epidemic.
