Google Maps to get updated with new Assistant, AR, and recommendation features

Google I/O Update: Google Maps 'For You' Section, Augmented Reality Features Announced

Google Maps has a solution for you. Another Google Maps feature called "Your Match" will suggest restaurants and other venues that are specifically catered to the end-user through the power of machine learning. The For You tab is created to surface information about new places that open up, or a "surprise pop-up from your favourite chef" and more using information from local experts, Google's algorithms, and trusted publishers.

You can also better plan group activities within maps with the new Shortlist function. The feature basically predicts the new restaurants that users will likely prefer based on data about the places they've visited before and frequented in the past.

During its Google I/O keynote at the start of its developers conference, the company demonstrated the ability to use AR in order to navigate around a city by foot. A new camera interface can tell users exactly where they are in the real world, with helpful animated guides.

If you find yourself futzing around trying to orient yourself coming out of a subway exit and your GPS is just not doing it for you, Google Maps will use visual positioning through your camera's vision to identify businesses and get a more accurate sense of direction. When you're ready to send it off to your friends and family members, recipients can either vote on their favorites or add more choices to the mix. Google Maps say to go South on High Street, but how do you know which way is South, and if it is an unfamiliar location, how do you know which one is High Street? Google News will be available in 127 countries on both Android and iOS, starting today, with a global roll-out planned for sometime later this week.

A shortlist feature aims to make it easier to select places to eat or hang out and have your friends vote on their choice, which will hopefully eliminate a lot of the back-and-forth now going on in your messaging app.

There is a new "For You" section as well, which will show you information about events and other local shenanigans based on communities users are interested in.
