Mets cutting ties with pitcher Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey booed off the field after another awful performance

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson announced Friday the pitcher had been designated for assignment after he decided going to the minor leagues wasn't for him, per ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

"Usually I get upset if a report is unexpected", Alderson said this week. And he sounded conflicted when he referred to Harvey as "an appealing, likable and vulnerable individual, " and insisted that a part of him is going to miss having Harvey around the team each day.

"We've tried to find some other solution over a fairly long period of time", said Alderson, who was hired by the Mets in October 2010.

Harvey is 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in four starts and four relief appearances. "So I mean this is something we've tried to address, we've struggled with, we've wrestled with over two managerial regimes".

Matt Harvey #33 of the New York Mets looks on after giving up a 3-run home run to Ozzie Albies #1 of the Atlanta Braves in the seventh inning at Citi Field on May 3, 2018, in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

After showing promise in spring training, Eiland said Harvey's arm got stiffer and "his stuff went backward" as the season progressed. The end of the Matt Harvey Era with the Mets. "We have a lot of clay to work with to build the starter sculpture". But Harvey gave up at least four runs in three straight starts this season while never pitching more than six innings. "So I think that at this point, pragmatism, realism far outweighed other considerations". Booed as he walked off the mound, Harvey took a seat in the dugout and stared at Citi Field. As a player with five years of major league service, he can not be assigned to the minor leagues without his consent. "We feel our job is to help every player in there and it's not a good feeling when you don't".

But Harvey's problems began long before this season. He came back from Tommy John surgery in 2015 and was an integral part of the Mets as they won the National League Pennant.

If C.C. Sabathia can be successful at his age with softer soft, there's no reason Matt Harvey can't be.

Harvey, 29, embodied the rise of the Mets from a losing franchise to a World Series contender, but his time with the team was littered with brilliance, bravado, injuries and hard living. Thoracic outlet syndrome affected Harvey's feel for pitching and location, he said, but added that Harvey is healthy and has enough velocity. He drew a three-game suspension last season after he failed to show up for a game. The guy is just not competing anymore and seems to lack the heart necessary to survive in New York's spotlight. "So I guess the short answer is no".
