Immigrant Caravan

"We'd tell them no, and tell them to give the donations to us, but they'd say it's for the caravan".

The "Catch and Release" program allows foreign nationals to be released into the USA while they await immigration and asylum hearings through a number of legal loopholes and weak asylum laws.

More than 75% of applicants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador between 2011 and 2016 were rejected, according to Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse.

Roughly 70 more were still waiting. Many more wait at the plaza. As of Wednesday, about 65 of the Central American migrants had been allowed to pass through the San Ysidro pedestrian gate to apply for asylum, according to to immigration lawyers there.

The San Ysidro crossing is in the U.S. state of California, close to the Mexican city of Tijuana. Vice President Mike Pence called the caravan "a deliberate attempt to undermine the laws of this country and the sovereignty of the United States".

Some of the waiting had been told that USA border facilities were at capacity and could not accept more applicants, according to Gault.

U.S. border officials had allowed through only small groups at a time, saying the busy San Ysidro crossing to San Diego was saturated and the rest must be patient.

President Donald Trump has tweeted that these migrants shouldn't be allowed into the country.

Sessions said that an additional 35 assistant United States attorneys and 18 immigration judges to the crossing.

"The caravan members that are camped out at the border are trying to access a legal process which has existed for decades".

"We are sending a message worldwide: Don't come illegally". "Make your claim to enter America in the lawful way, and wait your turn".

The group of men, women and children were allowed to make their way into the port of entry border crossing in California on Thursday morning, joining dozens of others who had already crossed.

They also know that the process of vetting those seeking asylum could take as little as three months or as long as five years.
