Morocco cuts diplomatic ties with Iran over Western Sahara feud

Morocco Breaks Diplomatic Relations with Iran

"Kuwait denounces and rejects attempts targeting Morocco's stability, integrity and sovereignty", reported KUNA in an article issued Thursday.

The Foreign Ministry source emphasized that the principle of respect for the sovereignty of states is deeply embedded in the United Nations charter.

The Gulf Cooperation Council, as an institution, voiced its full and firm solidarity with Morocco, and affirmed support for all initiatives undertaken by the kingdom to consolidate its sovereignty and territorial unity.

A day earlier, Morocco cut its diplomatic ties with Tehran, claiming that the Iranian Embassy in Rabat would lend support to the Western Sahara Polisario separatist militants.

According to the statement, Abdullatif bin Rashid Zayani, the general secretary of the GCC, has also condemned Iran's interference in Morocco's internal affairs.

Said "We have tangible proof of Iran's involvement in backing Hezbollah's alliance with the Polisario".

Morocco, which has close relations with Iran's regional rival Saudi Arabia, Tuesday accused Tehran of using its Lebanese ally Hezbollah to deliver weapons to the Polisario Front.

Hezbollah denied the allegations, saying Morocco was acting under American, Israeli, and Saudi pressure.

The Iranian embassy worker is said to have enabled the facilitation of contacts and meetings, and unlocking logistic facilities for Hezbollah military officials to head to Tindouf, and meet up with Polisario members.

"Algeria rejects these totally unfounded remarks, made by the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the occasion of the announcement of severing diplomatic relations between his country and Iran", Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdelaziz Benali Cherif was quoted as saying by APS news agency.
