WhatsApp founder plans to leave after broad clashes with parent Facebook

Jan Koum co-founder and CEO of Whats App speaks at the WSJD Live conference in Laguna Beach

Koum announced his exit from WhatsApp immediately after The Washington Post on Monday reported his plans to depart "after clashing with its parent, Facebook, over the popular messaging service's strategy and Facebook's attempts to use its personal data and weaken its encryption".

WhatsApp's CEO is leaving their parent company Facebook citing disagreements with their management of user data.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg quickly commented on Koum's Facebook post about his departure, writing "Jan: I will miss working so closely with you". "But it is time for me to move on".

The CEO and co-founder of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has chose to leave parent company Facebook as he was apparently unhappy with privacy decisions being made by the social media empire. This has been seen as a deal breaker and Jan had been informing Facebook staff and board of his decision to leave the organisation for quite some time.

Facebook has been trying to defuse questions about whether it can be trusted with the reams of personal information it collects to sell ads and whether its social network does more harm than good. The WhatsApp co-founder attempted to push back where possible, but felt that Facebook's board of directors "paid lip service to privacy and security concerns he raised". "Those values will always be at the heart of WhatsApp". And I'll still be cheering WhatsApp on - just from the outside.

Once the Stickers feature is rolled out, WhatsApp users will be able to send stickers to each other that are created by WhatsApp as well as third-parties.

Subsequently, it was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for a figure of a whopping $19 billion, which is its largest acquisition till date. Alongside some key announcements related to Facebook and Instagram, the social media giant announced two new massive features which are coming to WhatsApp.

Brian Acton, the other Co-founder of WhatsApp, had left in November a year ago and openly supported the #DeleteFacebook movement too.
