Amazon's new Tech Hub in Boston's Seaport will create 2,000 tech jobs in the city

It's interesting to note that on its Boston job site, Amazon calls it the "Athens of America".

Amazon will formally announce on Tuesday a huge expansion in Boston that will bring 2,000 technology jobs to a new building in Seaport Square, where it will focus on developing its Alexa voice-activated technology, as well as cloud computing and robotics.

In addition, an uncertain future for immigration and work visas in the US brought on by the current White House administration means Amazon may look overseas before hiring Americans, Klugen said. Dougherty spoke Monday in the bunker-like former Canada Post mailing center that's set to be re-developed to host Amazon's new 416,000-square-foot office.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says 52,000 units are either already being build or are going through the permitting process, but he'd like to see more.

Boston is among a list of 20 finalists to land Amazon's second headquarters, which would create about 50,000 new jobs and cost more than $5 billion.

"Amazon is excited to create 3,000 more highly-skilled jobs in Vancouver", said Alexandre Gagnon, vice president of Amazon Canada and Amazon Mexico. In January, it wrote, "By Amazon's choice, this is a public auction, so you should conduct this deal out in the open".

Amazon's current Boston technology employees mostly work on Alexa, Amazon Web Services and Audible, the company said.

Further expansion for Amazon in Canada may also be in the offing. Its new building, set to begin construction later this year and open in 2021, would mark the company's biggest presence to date, and comes as Amazon opens a new office in nearby Fort Point.

In November, the company announced 1,000 new tech jobs at its Vancouver office.

With more than 566,000 employees worldwide, Amazon ranks #1 on Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies, #2 in Fortune's World Most Admired Companies, and #1 on The Harris Poll's Corporate Reputation survey.
