Larry Harvey, Co-Founder of Burning Man Festival, Dies at 70

Burning Man founder Larry Harvey dies at age 70

Harvey died Saturday morning at a San Francisco hospital surrounded by family, according to Burning Man officials.

Festival CEO Marian Goodell said that the reason for the death of Harvey dent has become a massive stroke, which the artist was moved on 4 April.

The Burning Man festival (literally "burning man") is in the desert black Rock (Nevada, USA), 1986. The world has lost a great leader and an inspiring mind.

"A humanist at heart, Larry did not believe in any sort of existence after death", longtime friend Stuart Mangrum said Saturday. We resolutely held out for a miracle.

By the turn of the century the festival had transformed not only the surrounding towns and cities, it had caused a global art movement, as smaller satellite events under the Burning Man rubric sprang up around the globe.

Larry Harvey, the man behind the anti-establishment, anti-consumerist cultural phenomenon that is Burning Man, has passed away at the age of 70. A culture of possibility.

The AP once described Burning Man as "an esoteric mix of pagan fire ritual and sci-fi Dada circus where some paint their bodies, bang drums, dance naked and wear costumes that would draw stares in a Mardi Gras parade".

Burning Man represents utopian ideals about society and consumerism, and Harvey outlined them in the 10 Principles of Burning Man.

"Unlike art festivals of the past, in which attendees would pay a fee to observe creations, the Burning Man festival promoted itself from the beginning as an inclusive event with 'No Spectators".

Although known for retaining its joyful celebrative atmosphere as it grew from a small gathering to one of huge proportions, Burning Man occasionally had its problems.

While Harvey would speak frequently about Burning Man in the years that followed, he would reveal little about himself and it was often hard to discern truth from fiction. Last year, a man died after running into the burning flames and suffering burns on nearly his entire body. That's when a skeletal five-story-tall wood and neon man-shaped statue, stuffed with fireworks, is set ablaze. That same year, three other people were injured when a drunk driver ran over their tent.

He is survived by his son Tristan Harvey; brother Stewart Harvey; and nephew Bryan Harvey.
