E. Coli Infections: Contaminated Romaine Lettuce Sickens 98, Hospitalizes 46

Scientist Karen Xavier holds a petri dish containing a stool sample of small bacteria colonies in Denver. Samples like this one are examined to try to find the source of the E. coli outbreak

"This is a very bad bug that can make people very, very ill with potential renal failure and potentially even death", said Marguerite Pappaioanou, of the University of Washington School of Public Health. However, FDA inspectors have not yet visited the farm and have not been provided details such as the specific location of the field where the implicated romaine was grown.

The Yuma region provides most of the romaine sold in the USA during the winter. The patient age range is from 1 to 88 years.

"E. coli and things like that are normally caused by fault production and not having clean facilities for washing your produce", said Jeb Bush, Forsyth Farmer's Market. Some indicators that people have E. coli include vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

Dr. Fertel said in many cases, symptoms should resolve on their own with rest and plenty of fluids.

" This is a greater hospitalization rate than normal for E. coli O157: H7 infections, which is generally around 30 percent", the company stated. He added that this is a particularly aggressive form of the bacteria.

This is the most significant Shiga-toxin producing E.coli break out considering that a 2006 break out connected to spinach grown in the Salinas Valley in California, Wise stated. Romaine lettuce is the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten by those who got sick.

Four other people also appear to be sick from E. coli in Placer County, but it is still unclear if those are connected to the contaminated Romaine lettuce or not. That farm, Harrison Farms of Yuma, Arizona, is thought to be responsible for the Alaska cases linked to whole romaine, but not the rest of the cases, which have been traced to chopped romaine.

CBS News reports that the recall only applies to romaine lettuce with "best if used by" date before or on May 12, when Freshway Foods stopped buying its romaine from Yuma, Beer said.

The outbreak was originally thought to come from chopped romaine lettuce, but the warning was expanded last week to include chopped, whole heads and hearts or romaine, as well as salads or salad mixes containing romaine.

The CDC anxious that E. coli health problem can be really major, even fatal.
