British Toddler Alfie Evans' Case Spreads to American Mainstream Media

Alfie Evans: Father says family now want 'struggling' baby to be allowed home

Alfie Evans’ parents to meet doctors in bid to take him home

"Our lives have been turned upside down by the intense focus on Alfie and his situation", Evans said outside Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital, where Alfie has been treated for more than a year.

On Thursday The Catholic Association called on British authorities to allow the terminally ill toddler to travel to Italy for treatment.

The 23-month-old boy has an incurable degenerative neurological condition, and doctors say that further treatment is futile, and that he should be allowed to die.

Alfie Evans' father Tom Evans called for supporters of Alfie and his family to "stand down" so they can begin "building a bridge" with Alder Hey Children's Hospital and its staff.

It was a strikingly different tone from the one he struck hours earlier, when he said doctors were wrong about Alfie's prognosis and threatened to resume his fight in court.

Alfie was being kept alive by artificial ventilation, but was ultimately taken off life support this week due to a court order.

But a news report in Sky News took that statement to mean that Alfie's parents were making plans for his eventual death.

The long legal battle between Alfie's parents, backed by a Christian pressure group, and his doctors has drawn global attention.

After the Evans family lost their last legal challenge, the hospital removed ventilation, but Alfie has survived longer than had been predicted, and he has been given oxygen, nutrition, and hydration.

"Alfie is doing still as well as he can".

As late as Thursday morning, Evans told LBC radio: "They [Alder Hey hospital] hate us. they don't like us".

On April 25, the hospital issued a statement complaining about "often inappropriate interventions from a range of external bodies and individuals, some of which have caused significant disruption to our children, families and staff". Doctors say it is hard to estimate how long Alfie will live without life support, but that there is no chance he will get better.

The case has provoked strong feeling over whether judges, doctors or parents have the right to decide on a child's life.

Emotions have run high over the case, with a band of supporters protesting regularly outside the hospital, at times trying to storm its entrance.

The hospital increased its security, and police said they were monitoring social media posts about the case for malicious communications.

Poland's President Andrzej Duda tweeted on Wednesday that "Alfie Evans must be saved". "His courageous little body has proved again that the miracle of life can be stronger than death". "Perhaps all that's needed is some goodwill on the part of decision makers".

"We hope you will respect this".

A British court will hear an appeal on Wednesday in the case of a gravely ill, 23-month-old boy whose case has attracted global attention, including from Pope Francis.

Italy has offered citizenship to Alfie in an attempt to smooth his path to treatment in the country.
