Investigators say Golden State Killer behind bars

Joseph James De Angelo Jr was arrested in California Tuesday night on two murder charges. The now-72-year-old is suspected of being the Golden State Killer

Joseph James DeAngelo was accused by authorities in California of being the notorious Golden State Killer who terrorized neighborhoods throughout that state in the 1970s and 1980s, leaving a string of murders in his wake.

DeAngelo was born in NY state and graduated from high school east of Sacramento.

Police said they've no matched the killer's DNA with DeAngelo's.

In the 1970s, he was an officer at two different police departments: in Exeter, south of Fresno, and Auburn, near Sacramento.

Former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo has been identified as the man believed to have committed 12 killings and 48 rapes across California from 1976 to 1986, authorities said. He married in 1973 and later divorced. The man's neighbors said he kept to himself but would fly into a rage at times. DeAngelo worked for the Auburn Police Department from August, 1976 to September 1979, according to the Auburn City Manager. In a picture from the paper, DeAngelo is interacting with a local youth baseball team. In bottom left, he is seen in his U.S. Navy photo and bottom right in a photo from when he was a police officer.

"Very possibly he was committing the crimes during the time he was employed as a peace officer and, obviously, we'll be looking into whether it was on the job", said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.

DeAngelo was a police officer for two California departments, but was sacked from Auburn in 1979 after being accused of shoplifting dog repellent and a hammer from a store, according to the Auburn Journal at the time. He was convicted and fined $100 then later fired.

"The real issue is how we can help those agencies in helping to investigate this case and trying to prosecute this case".

"We just didn't give up", O'Dell said. DeAngelo, however, was unknown to investigators until a week ago. "He'd simply be yelling at nothing within the yard, pacing in circles", Gorman, who grew up behind DeAngelo, instructed the Bee.

"He's going to want all the attention he wants out of this", Carole said.

DeAngelo had been working for a Save Mart grocery retailer distribution middle in Roseville for the final 27 years till retiring final yr, the Sacramento Bee reported. He retired in 2017.

"None of his actions in the workplace would have led us to suspect any connection to crimes being attributed to him". A journalism professor at the College of the Sequoias was fatally shot during a burglary at his home in September of 1975.

It's been more than 40 years since the Golden State Killer's first recorded attacks, which began in and around Sacramento. He targeted single women but is also suspected for cases like the 1978 murder of Sgt. Brian Maggiore and his wife, Katie, in Rancho Cordova, California. At a news conference later that day, authorities announced murder charges have been filed against DeAngelo, of Citrus Heights, in the murders of the Smiths.

A discarded DNA sample provided the confirmation detectives needed. Numerous crimes were committed just miles from his home in Citrus Heights where he was arrested on Tuesday. He is being held in Sacramento County Jail on multiple counts of suspicion of murder without bail.
