Refinery explosion in Superior, Wis., injures at least 20

A reporter on scene was told by officials to leave the area around Husky Energy. Mary's Hospital-Superior is evacuating all patients, as a precaution.

The explosion at the Husky Energy oil refinery happened at about 10 a.m., Superior Fire Chief Steve Panger told The Associated Press.

UPDATE: Nemadji Golf Course is being evacuated due to the smoke from the explosion at Husky Energy.

A spokeswoman for St. Luke's, which operates two hospitals in the area, said it was treating one injured patient, but did not provide details on that person's condition.

Electric crews from Hunt Electric were performing annual maintenance at the plant, so more workers than usual were on site.

Bob King, a photographer for the Duluth News Tribune who flew over the plant in an airplane, said one of the storage tanks at the facility was broken and a thick black liquid was pouring out. She says the extent of injuries is unknown. We will be keeping all students in the buildings."An employee from the Superior Bank of Commerce said they could feel some sort of explosion".

Officials say there are no fatalities at this time. Multiple agencies have responded.

The fire chief says there are no known fatalities.

The Superior Police Department described the situation as an "evolving scene" in a news release.

Five people have been taken to the hospital at this time;.

The Superior refinery was built in 1950, acquired by Murphy Oil in 1958 and sold to Indianapolis-based Calumet for $475 million in 2011.

He said this is a defensive operation at this point and they are not sending crews in to fight the fire.

An explosion and fire at a large oil refinery in Superior, Wisconsin, has resulted in at least five casualties, according to the local fire department.

The number of people injured has grown to at least 11, from initial reports saying six.

According to our sister station, KBJR, smoke was seen billowing from the refinery just after 10 a.m.

Multiple crews were called in to assist in the response.

Neighbors near the oil refinery posted on Facebook the explosion shook their homes. Duluth Hospitals are preparing to treat victims of the explosion.

"St. Luke's has set up an incident command center and we are fully prepared to receive patients from the explosion at the refinery in Superior".
