Gunfire Reported Near Saudi Palace, King Evacuated

Amateur video clips of heavy gunfire from the Khozama district Saturday of the capital sparked worries of possible unrest.

"The regulation for the use of remote controlled drones is in its final stages", the Saudi Press Agency said, citing the interior ministry.

There was no information of where the king was.

There were no casualties, and King Salman was not at his palace at the time, a senior Saudi official told Reuters.

A security screening point had noticed a small, unauthorized recreational drone, leading security forces to deal with it "according to their orders and instructions", state news agency SPA has said. As the Kingdom has not yet formally formed regulations for using drones.

Saudi Arabia has asked drone enthusiasts to obtain permissions first before letting their devices hit the sky.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman was not in his palace when gunfire was heard.

Security around the palaces appears to have tightened in recent months as powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman oversees landmark social and economic reforms to prepare for a post-oil era, despite the risk of riling religious hardliners.

Even the 32-year-old leader ousted his elderly cousin as crown prince past summer at a palace coup after which jailed senior royals as part of an anticorruption sweep.

Royal guards killed the gunman, identified by the ministry as a 28-year-old Saudi national armed with a Kalashnikov and three grenades.

The Yemeni government has said that Iran supplied the country's Houthi rebels with drones used to attack Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al Jubeir has repeated this offer to the USA with the hope that this time Washington will take it more seriously.
