White House Says Pompeo Opponents Are Undermining North Korea Talks

Anti-LGBT statements prompt senators to oppose Pompeo nomination

From 'Deeply Disappointing' to 'Disgusting,' Heitkamp Draws Ire as First Democrat to Back Pompeo

Up to now, each single Democrat on the committee has introduced their opposition to Pompeo, apart from Sen.

"Just has President Obama was entitled to nominees, even if I disagreed with them, President Trump has his nominees that should be voted on", Gardner said.

With Paul opposed and Republican John McCain of Arizona out battling cancer, Pompeo needs some Democrats to be confirmed.

Although Pompeo doesn't have the vote of confidence, the committee chair could still try to move his nomination to the Senate floor.

Markey told reporters who gathered at his Boston Senate office that he will oppose the nomination of Pompeo - the current Central Intelligence Agency director - when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee votes to confirm the president's pick next week.

"When that meeting is set is strictly up to the president unless Kim Jong Un is going to dictate when it happens".

Friday, that final Democrat said he would not be voting in favor of Pompeo, according to a report from The Hill. Now, thanks to the opposition from those 10 Democrats and Paul, it appears that Pompeo could soon become the first to receive a negative recommendation.

"I think that's wishful thinking".

"I will say this about Rand Paul: He's never let me down", Trump said.

"I've known Director Pompeo for eight years", Gardner said.

The White House is pressuring Senate Democrats to back Mike Pompeo as secretary of state, arguing that failing to do so would undercut talks with North Korea after his recent meeting with Kim Jong Un. "Now I don't expect diplomacy to be negotiated out in the open, but I do expect for someone who is the nominee to be secretary of state, when he speaks with the committee leadership, and when he was asked specific questions about North Korea, to share some insights about such a visit".

He aded that the secretary of state nominee, when pressed on key proliferation issues, said ground troops could be used in a preventive strike on North Korea - a situation which the senator cautioned could result in tens of thousands of US deaths in the first days of conflict alone.

"Pompeo demonstrated during this nomination process and during our meeting in March that he is committed to empowering the diplomats at the State Department so they can do their jobs in advancing American interests", she said in a statement Thursday.

Gardner said he and Pompeo have been friends for eight years now, stemming back to their days sitting next to each other on the House Energy and Commerce Committee when they were both congressman. "It would be a big deal for me to change my position on him", he said. Ben Cardin (MD), top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; and Sen.

"While I respect Mr. Pompeo's service to our nation as a solider and member of Congress, I also can not ignore his record of discriminatory, demeaning remarks and hawkish advocacy for confrontation and even regime change", he said in prepared remarks.
