Man convicted of bombing judge at Mountain Brook home asks Supreme Court to halt execution
Vance had been part of an en banc court that refused to overturn Moody's conviction for possessing a pipe bomb that detonated and injured his wife.
Moody became the oldest USA inmate put to death since executions resumed in the U.S.in the 1970s, according to the nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center.
"In the nearly 30 years since the explosion at their Mountain Brook home killed Judge Vance and seriously injured his wife, Helen, his family never lost faith in America's system of justice and the rule of law", Town said.
"I'm not a psychiatrist, but if you're talking about using labels like psychopath, this seems to be the kind of person that would fit that description because of absolute lack of empathy or concern for others", Mr Vance said. However, his lawyer and he haven't appealed to halt the execution. "Moody not only committed capital murder, he also sought to interrupt the flow of justice".
Moody had attended law school, and even acted as his own attorney as his case made its way through the legal system. An Alabama jury convicted him of capital murder five years later, and he was put on the state's death row.
Serial bomber Walter Leroy Moody has become the oldest prisoner to be executed in the US since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.
Earlier this year, the group's records show, Georgia executed a 67-year-old death row inmate. Officials intercepted a device that was sent to the 11th Circuit's offices in Atlanta, as well as a bomb that was mailed to a Florida office of the NAACP.
Moody has maintained his innocence insisting he was framed. On Thursday he was killed by lethal injection at a prison in Atmore, Alabama.
Vance's son, Robert Vance Jr., now a circuit judge in Jefferson County and Democratic candidate for chief justice in Alabama, said it's important that people remember how his father lived, not just how he died.
Zeigler said he is working on a plan - dubbed "Execution Delayed is Justice Denied" - that will "greatly speed up executions without increasing the danger of executing the wrong person".
"The point to emphasize is my Dad was personally opposed to the death penalty but always made clear that his personal feelings had to give way to the law", Vance said. They also argued that the aggravating factors used to impose a death sentence were improper.
Moody's attorneys, in their unsuccessful clemency petition argued that his victim was opposed to the death penalty, and halting the execution would honor Vance's beliefs.
In 1996, Moody was convicted of killing Vance. "Tonight, Mr. Moody's appeals finally came to a rightful end".
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said Thursday night that after almost 30 years, "Tonight, Mr. Justice has been served".
