Students plan national walkout for Columbine shooting anniversary

Students push for gun reform during National School Walkout Friday: What's happening in Northeast Ohio?

Unlike the March 14 protest, in which participants stayed outside for 17 minutes, each in honor of the 17 victims, students are expected to spend the whole day involved with the walkout. These trades of philosophies are structured around citizenship and responsible civic participation.

Some students plan to demonstrate at their schools, while others say they will get permission from their parents to leave school early and converge on the capital. Teachers today have seen an entire generation of students come of age under the direct threat of these weapons and practicing active shooter drills. He wrote that he was "very concerned" about student safety.

"A civic resources guide has been available at www.marionschools.net for several weeks now, providing students resources and ideas for potential activities for this Friday".

Nationwide, students from nearly 3,000 schools marked the event by leaving their classrooms at 10 a.m. local times to show solidarity for the Parkland, Fla., school shooting victims. "While I shouldn't have to fight for my own, or others', right to live, I will do everything I can to make sure my community never has to know the pain so many have had to face". Students will be held to normal operating procedures regarding attendance, as it is outlined in the Student Handbook.

He said he was getting ready to retire when a parent asked him to stay, telling him her child was in preschool at the time of the shooting. Remind students that their school is interested in respecting their wishes, but can not support the act of leaving school property, or being absent for such an activity. "Depending on a student's individual discipline history, however, consequences may be greater".

Local students are preparing for a peaceful protest Thursday. "The choice to participate or not participate is left to families".

His sentiment echoes that of Carroll County Superintendent Stephen Guthrie, who told Brett Hollander on Tuesday he anxious that the discussion of school violence has become overly divisive. "We, especially now, need their fresh and powerful voices".

The Palm Beach County school district couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.

That is until 17 people were killed after a Valentine's Day shooting in Parkland, Florida in February.

Didn't we already have national protests after the Parkland massacre?

He and a friend, David Winkler, organized a group of 100 students to Washington to meet with President Clinton later that year.

What is the school district doing to create safer schools?

Ben Gelt was a senior at Denver's East High School at the time, and was in philosophy class when news broke about Columbine. In addition, students that choose to participate must obviously weigh any information they may miss as a result since instruction will continue to occur in their classes. This would allow students who want to participate to do so and those who don't could go on to class, according to SCHS Principal Joe Covington.

News 6 is still waiting to hear back from other Orlando-area districts about the walkouts.

Now a nationwide student walkout is planned for Friday, April 20, and appears to be an act of political expression rather than a tribute to lives tragically lost.
