Uber tries to extend reach, DC users can now rent bikes
The station reported the law firm hired by Brock is hoping to get $25 to $50 million from Uber in the case, although the lawsuit says he is seeking unspecified damages.
Since its founding in 2009, Uber has expanded rapidly.
Starting today, Uber users in Washington will be able to book dockless Jumpbikes directly through the app.
While Uber has pulled its self-driving auto programs in all the markets where it operated, as well as not reapplied for a permit to operate in San Francisco, Khosrowshahi says not to take today's announcements as any sign that Uber is moving away from autonomous.
The expansion kicked off earlier this week after Uberannounced that it had acquired bike-sharing startup Jump. But this signals the next big step in its evolution into a broader transportation platform. The new Uber app for drivers was tested with 100 driver partners of Uber from Bangalore for the global beta launch before the launch of the stable revamped version.
"So we are having to discount very aggressively, much more than you'd think", Khosrowshahi said, to get people to share rides.
Anyone with the Uber app in D.C. can now use it to rent a JUMP bike, the electric bikes that Uber now owns.
Khosrowshahi said the company is aiding the National Transportation Safety Board in its investigation on why Uber's vehicle never noticed a woman crossing the street with her bicycle.
Uber partner organisations include the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), MP Shah Hospital, emergency services company Flare, vehicle dealer Toyotsu, Huawei, Techno, Essilor, Kingsway, and Telkom Kenya.
Uber and Getaround already had a partnership in place that allowed Uber drivers to make money driving Getaround cars, but this new deal will give a wider demographic access to the vehicles.
"Both of plaintiff's legs required amputation due to the severity of the crushing injuries", the lawsuit says, naming Uber, Lopez and the other driver among the defendants. "Now you can take a bike to rent your auto and go buy groceries". However, as Uber looks to expands its transportation options it may lure some riders back to mass-transit.
Khosrowshahi announced three partnerships on Wednesday.
In addition to today's rental vehicle deal with Getaround, Uberannounced a partnership with London-based Masabi, a mobile ticketing company that Uber said will help customers book and use public transit tickets directly within the Uber app.
