Florida Gov. Rick Scott to Enter Senate Race
12 April 2018, 12:23 | Donald Newman
Gov. Rick Scott aims to unseat Florida's Democratic senator
In Scott'sannouncement Monday, he touted himself as a governor who has never "played by the political rules", a personal aspect he said will help fix Washington. As the third-largest state, and the largest one likely to have a tight race in 2018, Florida will likely see one of the most expensive Senate contests in USA history.
Bustamante, who was instrumental in helping Scott hone his Spanish language skills, died as she was transitioning from the Governor's Office to Scott's Senate campaign.
Scott also promoted his candidacy with a focus on jobs, terms limits for legislators and an end to what he called Washington's "dysfunctional, old, exhausted thinking". The contest among Mr. Nelson and Mr. Scott alone is expected to cost a lot more than $100 million as well as perhaps as much as $150 million, mostly to buy television advertisements over Flo-Rida's10 broadcast networking markets.
"Rick Scott supports Puerto Rico because he cares", Hernandez said.
Scott issued a release describing Bustamante as "terrific and selfless" and said, "Her personality filled rooms and hearts".
That line is nearly an understatement for Scott: The "jobs" message is the raison d'être for his political identity, born in 2010 when faith in the state and national economy were low and unemployment numbers were high. "Floridians won't forget the damage Rick Scott's self-serving politics have done these last 7 years, no matter how he tries to change his spots and obscure his record". Last month, he signed into law new gun restrictions in response to a high school shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 students and faculty staff members dead in February.
Nelson began his political career in the era when Democrats controlled Florida government. But in Florida, the third most expensive race that cycle after Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Rubio, who faced off against Patrick Murphy, had spent over $21 million, and Murphy had spent over $19 million. The term-limited governor, who's served in the governor's mansion since 2011, has been teasing news of a national campaign for months.
