Zuckerberg: Facebook Should Have Spotted Russian Election Meddling Earlier

Is Facebook Considering A Paid Ad Free Version In Wake Of The Cambridge Analytica Scandal

After privately assuring senators that his company will do better, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is undergoing a two-day congressional inquisition that will be very public — and could be pivotal for his massive company.

Shares in Facebook are down more than 14 percent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke last month.

After facing mammoth controversy over its users' data breach via British political analytics firm Cambridge Analytica, the Facebook CEO is expected to testify before two Congressional committees next week. "That goes for fake news, foreign interference in elections, and hate speech", Zuckerberg said.

"As we become more and more used to using tools, we become more used to and comfortable sharing information about ourselves, and that information is being used in this way", McCully said.

Zuckerberg also apologized for being "too slow to spot and respond to Russian interference" during the 2016 USA presidential election.

Zuckerberg will get a second dose of questioning on Wednesday from the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.

It will be the first appearance before Congress for Mr. Zuckerberg, who looks only slightly older than during his giddy first television appearance in 2004 to explain the unexpected growth of the college service he called "The Facebook".

SANDBERG: The 87 million is anyone who Cambridge Analytica might have accessed their data. "The customers are not the people using Facebook".

On Monday, Zuckerberg's prepared testimony for Wednesday's hearing was released. "Savannah, I'm not going to sit here and say that we're not going to find more because we are".

On Saturday, Facebook said it suspended AggregateIQ, a Canadian political consulting firm, amid media reports it had ties to Cambridge Analytica.

"I started Facebook, I run it, and Im responsible for what happens here".

At the heart of this initiative will be a group of scholars who will define the research agenda; solicit proposals for independent research on a range of different topics; and manage a peer-review process to select scholars who will receive funding for their research -- as well as access to privacy-protected datasets from Facebook which they can analyse.

Paul Argenti, a professor of corporate communication at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, says the numerous Facebook announcements are not doing the company any favors.

"They don't understand ad targeting and they will probably ask him a bunch of unrelated questions that play to their respective political bases", said one technology industry source, who spoke on condition on anonymity because his company had not authorised him to speak on the matter for the record.

When is Mark Zuckerberg testifying before Congress?

"My top priority has always been our social mission of connecting people, building community and bringing the world closer together", Zuckerberg states, "Advertisers and developers will never take priority over that as long as I'm running Facebook". The social network is now working to ease concerns that it's platform can be easily weaponized to influence users. But Brian Wieser of Pivotal Research said the entire digital advertising industry, of which Google and Facebook are the leaders, could be impacted by the scandal.

To make matters worse, there has been a steady drip of damaging revelations about the company in the days leading up to Zuckerberg's testimony.
