Trump mulls “very tough” military response to Syria attack

In the meantime, US President Donald Trump in his Twitter account accused Putin, Russia and Iran responsible for the attack due to their backing of "Animal Assad".

Trump said Monday, "We are getting some very good clarity", regarding who was responsible, a task that has been hard throughout the Syrian war and the source of conflict among the many worldwide players involved.

The crisis was due to be discussed later on Monday at an urgent UN Security Council meeting, while the United States also circulated a draft resolution for a new independent inquiry of chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

"We are making a decision as to what we do with respect to the disgusting attack that was made near Damascus, and it will be met forcefully, and when I'm not saying because I don't like to talk about timing".

It has also repeatedly warned it will not accept its arch-foe Iran entrenching itself militarily in neighbouring Syria.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Vassily Nebenzia reiterated Russia's claim that there was no chemical attack over the weekend in the town of Douma near the Syrian capital Damascus.

Previously, Israel has notified Russian Federation of its actions in real time, but this time, a spokesman for Putin said there was no contact between Israel and Russian Federation before or during the overnight airstrike in Syria. "False information is being planted about the alleged use of chlorine and other toxic agents by the Syrian government forces", the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. In a statement, McCain said Trump "responded decisively" a year ago with the air strike and urged Trump to be forceful again to "demonstrate that Assad will pay a price for his war crimes".

Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop said she had been advised the Syrian regime was responsible for the attack in Douma, and voiced concerns over Russia's threat. "It was terrible", Trump said at the start of a Cabinet meeting where possible military action was discussed.

"Let us recall that our draft resolution to set up such a mechanism is in blue".

The administration's inaction even prompted The New York Times' editorial board to pen an opinion piece demanding Trump push for an end to the attacks.

Mrs May sidestepped a question on whether Parliament would be recalled from recess to debate any military intervention.

At least 14 fighters, including Iranians, were killed in the strike on the T-4 airbase, according to the monitoring organisation the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. We need more than a reaction.

Washington and Paris denied having carried out the strikes and SANA and the Russian army later said Israeli F-15s had fired several missiles at the base from Lebanese airspace. "If it's Russian Federation, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out and we'll know the answers quite soon". Everybody is going to pay a price, he will everybody will.

"We are studying that situation extremely closely".

The US State Department said Mr Johnson and his Washington counterpart had discussed "potential further steps the US and United Kingdom governments might take in coordination with other partners".

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad launched an offensive targeting rebel groups in Eastern Ghouta in February. It said the victims have been transferred to Tehran, and that funerals will be held in the victims' hometowns across the country.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted: "Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria".
