The rare instrument by Leandro Bislach sold for 135,000 Australian dollars (£73,528), the highest price for movie-related offerings among 227 lots up for sale in Sydney as part of the Australia-based New Zealander's divorce settlement.

More than 85 per cent of the 226 items on offer at the event were sold.

The date was carefully chosen - it's Crowe's wedding anniversary, which he once celebrated with his ex-wife, actress and singer Danielle Spencer.

"People just went mad".

"I don't really need that much stuff", Crowe told the program.

Following the auction, Crowe took to Twitter to express his satisfaction with the results, revealing he sold $3.7 million worth of his stuff, with ongoing discussions to sell another $350,000 worth, quipping, "not a bad hourly rate for a 5-hour shift".

Two items from Crowe's earlier film days piqued the interest of the National Museum Australia director Mathew Trinca.

The brown leather boxer's jockstrap from "Cinderella Man" was expected to attract Aus$500-Aus$600 but sold for Aus$7,000.

A breastplate worn by Crowe in his Oscar-winning efficiency bought for AU$125,000 (£68,246) at Sotheby's Australia, having been predicted to fetch between $20,000 (£10,919) and $30,000 (£16,379).

A likely cricket tragic paid $52,000 for a life-size bronze statue of Don Bradman but a bunch of cricket memorabilia is still for sale.

More surprisingly, a costume that Crowe wore in the same 2003 movie wasn't far behind, raking in AU$115,000.

Eye-watering amounts were shelled out for artwork - including $360,000 for a 1960 Charles Blackman - but other items were far less orthodox.

The pair sold for AU$10,000, while Sotheby's anticipated between AU$10,000 and AU$15,000.

The 54-year-old devised the auction as a way to deal with the end of his nine-year marriage to Danielle - following their separation in 2012 - and to clear out "stuff".

Included in the auction, viewed by hundreds live on social media, was a New Zealand test cricket "200 Club" cricket bat, the bat used to score Crowe's 17th test century and his signed New Zealand 1992 World Cup cap and shirt - that had a winning bid of $6000.
