The Australian quartet of Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and sisters Bronte and Cate Campbell were roared home by a fervent crowd to clock three minutes, 30.05 seconds and break their own record of 3:30.65 set at the Rio Olympics.

On Thursday, Canada finished second, almost four seconds behind.

"I know I have a lot of fans who were wanting to watch me race".

Earlier, the Australian women's team pursuit set a new Games record on their way to the first women's team pursuit medal at a Commonwealth Games.

Australian boxer Taylah Robertson secured the first medal of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games - nine days before her first bout.

Meawhile, on a disappointing note, India's hockey campaign was off to a disappointing start at the Commonwealth Games after the country's women's team was upstaged 2-3 by a lower-ranked Wales in a Group A clash here on Thursday.

"I didn't find out we were going to pull off a world record until we crossed the finish line but this afternoon we re-evaluated as a team and I got the call up and I'm so happy to be a part of this", said O'Brien, who came in for the final in place of Jordan Kerby who rode qualifying.

"I think I'm still in shock".

Aboriginal communties make up about three percent of Australia's population of 25 million but they remain the most disadvantaged, with higher rates of poverty, ill-health and imprisonment than any other community.

Thomas Hamer also won the men's S14 200m freestyle in world record time, while compatriot Eleanor Robinson won the women's S7 50m butterfly in the para-swimming events to ensure England finished the day top of the table.

Horton, the Olympic champion in the event, took the lead in the last 100m to win from McLoughlin, a 23-year-old from Brisbane making his Commonwealth Games debut.

"My parents were in the stand, and they've traveled all this way to support me and I just really, really wanted a gold medal".
