Snapchat gets group video calls and Mentions feature for tagging friends

Snapchat introduces group video chat feature: Here's how you can use it

Snapchat is rolling out group video chats - the same kind of group video chats that apps like Houseparty and Facebook Messenger offer.

Video chatting with your friends is more in line with private messaging than anything. Friends who are participating in the group chat will receive a notification prompting them to join the video chat, allowing you to summon everyone quickly. Once a Snapchat user starts the video chat in a group, each member of the group will get a notification telling them the video call is happening. Even, users can opt for an audio-only chat with a maximum of 32 members. You start the voice call the same way you would a group video call by being within a group chat.

Users will also be able to switch from video to voice and vice versa while still being a part of the same group video chat. As usual, all of the same face lenses will be available to users while they're in a group video chat.

Snapchat announced today that users on both iOS and Android will soon be able to start group video chats with their friends. Find your friends in the search bar and select "Chat" to start the group conversation.

Users can also join with just their voice, or send messages that others can read while they talk, Snap said.

Mentioning other users is a rather trivial feature for regular consumers but is extremely valuable to celebrities and high-profile users that have large audiences.

To tag a friend, users insert the '@' sign, type out their friend's username and then tap on the name of the user you want to tag.

Snapchat is having a bad time for a few months now.

Instagram, owned by Facebook, has been a relentless Borg-like foe to Snapchat, assimilating its best features and threatening its business survival.

While Snapchat and Instagram continue to battle, new features are being released consistently.

The immitated becomes the immitator: It is now Snapchat's turn to co-opt hot features from less-popular rivals.
