The Queen, who is at Windsor Castle for the traditional Easter Court, is being kept fully informed about the treatment of the duke who was admitted to the private King Edward VII hospital in Marylebone, central London on Tuesday.

Prince Philip has been admitted to a London hospital to have surgery on his hip.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has been hospitalised for a pre-scheduled surgery of his hip, the Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Tuesday.

The prince announced in May that he was retiring from most public duties after decades of royal service.

The Duke stepped down from his public duties last summer, but occasionly does still attend events with the Queen. "Further updates will be issued when appropriate", the Palace shared.

Philip also missed the Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel, where his grandson Prince Harry is due to marry Meghan Markle next month. "Prince Philip has been admitted to the hospital several times in recent years", a source previously told ET. "That's more important than someone's chronological age". He was also hospitalized for an "infection stemming from a pre-existing condition" in June of past year.

In June a year ago, Prince Philip was admitted to a hospital for two days as a "precautionary measure" for the treatment of an undisclosed infection. He became a naturalised British citizen and adopted the surname Mountbatten.
