Los Alamitos’ adopted ordinance claims the new state law “may be in direct conflict with federal laws and the Constitution.”

Los Alamitos leaders on Monday approved an ordinance that exempts their Orange County municipality from Senate Bill 54, a law that took effect January 1 and restricts local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. "I feel that the state has completely outstepped its boundaries by passing a law that conflicts with the U.S. Constitution".

Annie Lai, co-director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic at UC Irvine, said Los Alamitos is inviting a lawsuit if the ordinance is adopted. Rather, the ordinance will place our city in danger of a costly and uphill battle with the State of California.

Immigrant advocates, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, said Los Alamitos must follow state law and will be sued if the measure passes.

The 4-1 vote taken by officials in Orange County's second-smallest city was an important first step and a giant leap forward in terms of pushing back against the suffocating dictates coming from Gov.

The initiative is in addition to sanctuary city laws passed by numerous communities and other state laws that protect those without legal residency, including one that makes it crime for business owners to voluntarily help federal agents find and detain unauthorized workers and another that creates a state inspection program for federal immigration detention centers.

"They can't opt out of state law and automatically win", he said. Both sides were heard inside the city's council chambers. He arrived 27 years ago with a tourist visa and became a legal resident after marrying his USA citizen wife.

The sanctuary city movement has wide support among elected officials in the left-leaning state, the newspaper said.

She moved from San Francisco to Los Alamitos in 2001 before relocating to Rossmoor two years later and was bracing herself for a more conservative community.

"This state law has already been legally challenged by the federal government".

But he said he gets an earful from residents about the state's intrusion into local governing and felt his city should take a stand. "I think from an immigration standpoint, we just think that's a job for the USA government". "I am certain we would be facing litigation by the end of the week", Chirco said.

Unhappy with SB 54's blatant attempt to subvert the U.S. Constitution and undermine the rule of law, Los Alamitos City Council member Warren Kusumoto introduced an ordinance to nullify the bill and direct municipal police to cooperate with federal law enforcement.

Rev. Melinda Dodge, of Los Altos United Methodist Church in neighboring Long Beach, said the proposal goes against everything the community believes in and values.

"Our immigrants should not have to live in fear", she said.
