The activist and New York City native announced plans on social media Monday to run for governor against incumbent Andrew Cuomo.

She officially announced her candidacy with the release of a video on her Twitter account.

After Cynthia Nixon announced that she's throwing her hat into the ring in the NY governor's race, Twitter celebrated (and bemoaned) the news.

"I've never lived anywhere else", Nixon says in a short film included with her announcement. In 2010, Nixon signed a letter supporting a boycott of actors in Israel who said they would refuse to perform at a new theatre in the occupied West Bank.

The poll showed Cuomo with 66 percent of Democratic voters, compared to Nixon's 19 percent, the Times reported.

Former "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon is running for NY governor.

An accompanying video, which shows Ms Nixon at home with her wife, Christine Marinoni, and their young son Max, also addresses income inequality.

Nixon backed Bill de Blasio during his successful New York City mayoral bid in 2014. When NY1 asked her if she was considering the run, she said one word: "Maybe".

Mr Cuomo has dismissed concerns about potential challengers in the Democratic primary this September. It can't just be business as usual anymore. The general election is November 6.

Ms Nixon starred in the HBO television series from 1998 to 2004 about four women in New York City, playing the part of attorney Miranda Hobbes. Another sign of her seriousness is the people who have signed on with her candidacy from the get-go.

Theater was the lifelong New Yorker's original love - at just 18 years old, she made headlines by starring in two productions at the same time in 1984.

Nixon's spouse recently left her job at the New York City Education Department, and it appeared Nixon was filming a campaign ad in the city earlier this month. "That's called elections and that's fine".

They also favor Cuomo over state Sen.

In March 2014, a Siena College survey had 49 percent of NY voters saying they meant to vote to re-elect Mr. Cuomo, with 41 percent saying they preferred an alternative.
