Russian Federation 2018: Alvaro Morata left out of Spain squad, Diego Costa returns
18 March 2018, 01:30 | Sheila Mcguire
Struggling Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata's woes continued Friday when he was left off Spain's squad list for global friendlies with World Cup big guns Germany and Argentina, against whom the returning Diego Costa should feature.
A pair of midfielders, Valencia's Dani Parejo and Villarreal's Rodrigo, have been included for the first time.
Alonso never represented Spain at under-21 level but his performances for Chelsea in a wing back position have caught Lopetegui's eye and he now has the chance to stake his claim to a place in the final squad in Russian Federation. They have players who are very risky [but] we have to trust in our strengths.
Costa had not featured for Spain since a World Cup qualifier against Macedonia on June 11 and missed the team's final four qualifiers because of a dispute with Chelsea.
The former Chelsea forward, now back at Atletico Madrid, hadn't played any competitive football before January as a result of the club's transfer ban. "They'll all be competing for their spots".
Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has left Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata out of the national team squad for friendlies against Germany and Argentina, while Diego Costa was included after returning to action with Atletico Madrid.
"Tomorrow is not the World Cup, there are players that are not included but have their chances intact as is the case with the players included", Lopetegui told reporters, according to FourFourTwo.
He said: "I think we have to try to do both". I am only focused on our upcoming game and I want to have players that are in good physical shape. "Morata I am sure will have a great end to the season and will have a good chance of going to the World Cup". "My only worry is to have the players in best form for Chelsea".
Conte also shrugged off fears the likes of Eden Hazard could leave if Chelsea fail to qualify for the Champions League, saying: "Don't forget that two years ago Chelsea finished 10th".
