Academy President John Bailey Reportedly Being Investigated Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

Three claims of sexual harassment have been made against John Bailey

Not Released

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has allegedly received three harassment claims made against Bailey on Wednesday, according to Variety.

The latest in a string of public relations crises to hit the academy in recent years, the accusations against Bailey come as the group itself has been navigating the sexual misconduct scandals that have reverberated across the entertainment industry in recent months, sparking the Time's Up movement that loomed large over this year's awards season up to and including the recent Oscar telecast. If forced to step aside he would be temporarily replaced by the vice-president, Lois Burwell, a veteran makeup artist. The Academy released a statement today saying it wouldn't comment on the situation other than to say that its membership committee is now investigating and will report its findings to the board of governors.

At a February lunch for this year's Oscar nominees, Bailey promised the Academy would adopt a "greater awareness and responsibility in balancing gender, race, ethnicity, and religion". In October, the Academy voted to expel Harvey Weinstein less than 10 days after the New York Times first reported on his history of sexual harassment.

The organisation also insisted there would be no further statements "until the full review is completed".

It was unclear if Bailey would continue to serve as the president of the Academy or if he has been suspended during the investigation.

The 75-year-old cinematographer was elected to his position last August, and was the first-ever president from the cinematographers branch of the organization that chooses the annual Academy Award winners.

ET has reached out to both The Academy and Bailey for comment.

In December, the Academy issued renewed "standards of conduct" to which it expects its members to adhere.

In addition to creating a no-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment, the Academy launched a new process to handle allegations, with the Board of Governors determining the disciplinary action.

In the academy election Bailey defeated the actor Laura Dern to head the group.
