MLB Rumors: This Team Expected To Sign Jake Arrieta In Coming Days

Report: Jake Arrieta Nearing Deal With Phillies

It is clear that the Phillies are planning to make a legitimate run at the National League East division crown. The Phillies, who struck early in free agency by signing first baseman Carlos Santana to a three-year, $60 million deal, lurked late for Arrieta with an eye toward 2019 and beyond, when they are expected to more aggressively contend for a playoff berth.

Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because the contract is pending a physical.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today says the deal is for three seasons worth $75 million.

Jake Arrieta is reportedly heading to Philadelphia.

The former Cubs ace was one of several marquee free agents remaining on the market weeks into spring training that hadn't hammered out a deal.

Arrieta was 68-31 with a 2.73 ERA in five seasons in Chicago after starting his career in Baltimore. That seems unlikely from the Phillies, seeing as they need rotation help and could use Arrieta's veteran presence, but the market has been odd this winter.

The Padres, Nationals and Phillies have all been connected to Arrieta over the last month or so, but no concrete offers seem to have materialized lately.

Signing Arrieta is a message that management is ready to move past the rebuilding process.

Arrieta will front a rotation that includes promising young arms in Aaron Nola and Vince Velasquez.

Arrieta made 61 starts and pitched to a 3.30 ERA (129 ERA+) while striking out roughly a batter per inning, according to CBS Sports.
