Trump's military parade plans come into focus: planes, but no tanks

Memo: No Tanks, 'Older' Aircraft at Trump's Military Parade

Sent to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Thursday, a Pentagon planning memo showed that President Donald Trump's military parade will focus on honoring veterans and emphasize the "price of freedom".

In a memo, it said tanks would not be involved to help limit damage to roads.

According to CNN, which obtained the memo, the parade will feature military aircraft, but not heavy military vehicles like tanks.

The parade will focus on the contributions of USA veterans throughout the history of the military, starting with the Revolutionary War, and will highlight the evolution of women veterans from World War II to the present, according to the memo.

While the cost of the parade and celebrations haven't been revealed, NPR reported that it could cost as much as $50 million.

It looks as if President Donald Trump will get the military parade he has coveted for months. It will close with a "heavy air component", which officials hope will include older planes. The White House budget director recently told Congress the cost to taxpayers could be between $10m and $30m.

In practice, that means "period uniforms", re-enactments and even the use of an "old guard fife and drum", the memo says.

The Joint Staff will be in charge of planning the event in a way that integrates the parade into Washington's planned Veterans Day festivities on November 11, according to the report.

One major element that will be missing from the festivities: tanks.

The suggested plans do, however, call for a representation of veterans across US history and an air demonstration, according to a note from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis's office at the Pentagon.

The parade route will reportedly go from the White House to the Capitol.

The parade will also highlight the evolving role of women in the military.

Trump was delighted by France's Bastille Day celebration during a visit to Paris last July, and praised the parade months later, saying, "We're going to have to try and top it".

The parade Trump was referring to is the Bastille Day parade he attended past year in Paris.
