Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin wins second straight World Cup overall title
Mikaela Shiffrin won her second straight overall World Cup title, finishing third in a giant slalom on Friday. She holds a 175-point lead over Petra Vlhova of Slovakia with two races left in the season.
Shiffrin notched her 11th win this season, matching her total from last season, and in her last possible race broke the record for most wins before turning 23.
Shiffrin, who turns 23 on Tuesday, set the mark for the most World Cup wins by a 22-year-old, and she says she's not done pushing hard this season.
In making Friday's podium behind Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel and Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg Shiffrin moved into an unassailable lead in the overall standings. Wendy Holdener of Switzerland finished second, 0.09 of a second behind Shiffrin.
"It was a pretty tight race, so it was not easy to go into the second run and think, 'Oh, yeah, I'm fine, ' and to just ski", Shiffrin said.
The World Cup finals begin Wednesday with women's and men's downhill, and the season concludes next Sunday. Lindsey Vonn won the sport's most coveted prize four times.
Vonn, 33, will also be racing in Are for the first time since winning downhill bronze at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, where Shiffrin won gold and silver in GS and combined, respectively. "Hopefully, I'm not going to be feeling a lot of nerves (in Are) because there is not a lot of risk". Moser-Proell returned and won another 21 races.
Shiffrin finished in third place, moving up a spot after her opening run, and she was only 0.74 seconds behind victor Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway.
Mikaela Shiffrin of U.S. takes 3rd place during the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Women's Giant Slalom on March 9, 2018 in Ofterschwang, Germany. Gallhuber's compatriot Bernadette Schildfinished third, 0.39 seconds behind the leader.
