Modi and Macron's pact for military cooperation has China written all over it
Addressing a joint press briefing after holding a bilateral with Prime MinisterNarendra Modi in Delhi this afternoon, Mr Macron also said that stability in the Indian Ocean is important for the stability of the region.
Given the vast areas of cooperation between India and France, underlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as stretching from the "earth to the sky", the relationship contains an alternative to both the U.S. and Russian Federation when it comes to military hardware, aircraft, space cooperation and nuclear reactors.
Kovind said that India's strategic ties with France have been expanding not just in traditional sectors of defence, space and civil nuclear energy but also in the emerging areas of counter-terrorism and maritime and cyber-security.
"We consider France one of our most reliable defence allies", Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
"I think we (India and France) have very good chemistry". "India and France have made a decision to work together to deal with threats of terrorism and radicalisation", Macron said after having talks with Modi.
Under the deal, India and France will open their naval bases to each other's warships, a move seen as an attempt to check China's territorial ambitions. "I want most of the researchers to come to France and I am happy to be here today", he said.
"Once installed, the Jaitapur project will be the largest nuclear power plant in the world, with a total capacity of 9.6 gigawatts", according to a joint statement issued Saturday by the governments during Macron's visit to India.
He finally concluded by saying that for the sake of Earth's future, India and France were committed to the success of the International Solar Conference (ISA).
President Macron met foreign minister Sushma Swaraj this morning. President Macron and his wife will also visit the Taj Mahal.
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that Modi and Sopoaga "exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in renewable energy, developmental assistance, blue economy and global forums".
Indian sources also said that unless the EDF is out of its financial mess, the NPCIL will not go ahead with a final contract or a General Framework Agreement with the French company. "Tomorrow, we are co-hosting the International Solar Alliance and the presence of the French President at the founding conference will take our climate partnership to newer heights". This meeting assumes extra significance in the light of the United States under President Trump pulling out of the Paris accord.
Mr Modi and Mr Macron are particularly anxious as China extended its military presence by opening a naval base in the eastern African nation of Djibouti a year ago.
