Jared Kushner will visit Mexico on Wednesday and meet President Enrique Pena Nieto - who canceled a White House meeting last month after an angry clash with President Trump over who would pay for the commander-in-chief's border wall.

Beyond that, Mr. Kushner, who also met with Mexico's foreign minister, did not invite the American ambassador - Roberta S. Jacobson, a diplomat with more than 30 years of experience in the region - to join him in the meetings, according to a senior American official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

According to a statement from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Kushner relayed a message from President Trump about "the importance of continuing to progress on joint initiatives".

Jared Kushner listens during a meeting between President Donald Trump and congressional members in the Cabinet Room of the White House February 13, 2018.

He and Videgaray have reportedly cultivated a close personal relationship that often circumvents official diplomatic channels. She was not invited to yesterday's meetings, a USA official told CNN.

Trump has said that Canada and Mexico could be exempt from the tariffs if they reach a deal on a new version of NAFTA, but both countries have criticized the proposal.

A senior US administration official confirmed Kushner's visit, adding that the talks would remain centered on the security, immigration and trade, but including among other issues, according to Reuters.

Sputnik reported that White House sources said Trump, in the telephone exchange, had insisted that the Latin American country should pay for his campaign-promised wall to keep out undocumented immigrants.

Last month, Peña Nieto called off an official trip to Washington to meet with Trump following a tense phone call between the two leaders, a White House official said.

However, in a Twitter post Monday he appeared to suggest that Mexico and Canada may be granted an exemption, "if a new and fair NAFTA agreement is signed".
