Advisory warns of "exceptionally cold weather" for Ireland
24 February 2018, 07:05 | Antonio Miles
"Cold weather is now established across the country with widespread overnight frosts", said Paul Gunderson, chief operational meteorologist at the Met Office.
For the best part of the next week, temperatures will rarely, if ever, rise to double figures while regularly dropping below zero, with Met Éireann warning of "exceptionally cold" conditions and widespread wintry showers by early next week.
These will also be accompanied by bitterly cold temperatures, and a significant wind chill.
The Met Office website reads: "Showers or longer periods of snow will affect eastern parts of the United Kingdom during Tuesday".
With the high pressure remaining over Scandinavia for a number of days, the cold weather will remain and potentially last until the beginning of March. Temperatures will vary from 5º to 8º, in fresh to strong southeasterly winds.
The bright and sunny spell of weather will continue into next week, but temperatures of -5 degrees are forecast in parts by Tuesday.
Over the coming days, there will be good opportunities for both drying and spraying. It will become colder, with temperatures of -1 degrees rising to 7 degrees before falling again in the evening.
"Sunday night will be dry and clear in mostly light easterly breezes".
