Mitt Romney is running for US Senate in Utah

Mitt Romney said in a video announcement Friday that he will run for the US Senate from Utah setting out on a glide path to Washington where he will likely play a central role driving the direction of the fractious Republican Party

Romney is aiming to replace retiring Sen.

Mitt Romney wants to go to Washington, and he's not hiding how he feels about the president.

Romney seemed to address some critics of his bid head-on during the video.

Long-regarded as the most vocal GOP critic of USA president Donald Trump, Romney used his announcement to take a dig at the White House on the issue of immigration.

CNBC postulates that Romney would "likely agree with Trump on most issues", particularly those fiscal in nature. Yet, following Trump's election win, Romney said he was "impressed" with Trump's transition and cabinet nominees. Trump announced there was blame "on both sides", causing many, including Romney, to condemn the remark. The president, who has made tamping down on illegal immigration a central part of his administration, plans to scrap the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in March, which poses a deportation risk for millions of immigrants brought to the children. He said while the Beehive State balances its budget and welcomes immigrants, Washington is buried in debt and sends a message of exclusion. And on immigration, Mormon voters much more dovish than the immigration hardliners now shaping the debate in Washington.

Romney, 70, is expected to make a more formal announcement in the evening at the Utah County Republican Party's Lincoln Day Dinner.

Leading up to Romney's widely anticipated announcement, confidantes said he intends to focus his campaign on Utah, where he moved with his wife, Ann, after losing the 2012 presidential election to incumbent Democrat Barack Obama.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, whom Romney tapped as his vice presidential running mate in 2012, immediately hailed his old partner's "unparalleled experience, conservative leadership and lifetime of service".

Romney's candidacy comes as no surprise. "His talent and drive as a public servant will ensure Utah maintains a strong seat at the table".
