Ken Rosenthal reported that the deal is for 6 years and $126 million, with the possibility that incentives drive the total value of the contract to $150 million.

Darvish initially signed a six-year, $60-million deal with the Rangers ahead of the 2012 season.

When it pertains to pitchers, the headliner for all of the offseason for starters has been Yu Darvish, who ended his season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after starting with the Texas Rangers.

But for Fantasy Baseball purposes, I'm more interested in the other side of the coin: The Cubs chose Darvish.

Darvish joins Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood in the Cubs' rotation. The choice to give Darvish a sixth guaranteed year undoubtedly went a long way toward the Cubs' winning the bidding. He has always been a strikeout pitcher owning a 11.0 K/9 rate (the highest rate in Major League Baseball history among pitchers with 100 career starts), and he is a perennial candidate to hit the 200 strikeout mark. It certainly doesn't mean Arrieta would've been better going forward for the Cubs, who now have in Darvish a 31-year-old with a dizzying array of pitches and arguably as much pure talent as anyone in the game. Darvish figures to replace fellow right-hander Jake Arrieta, who remains available on the free-agent market. However, the Dodgers are hoping to stay under the luxury tax threshold in 2018 and couldn't clear enough money in order to afford Darvish. He had 209 strikeouts in 186 2/3 innings.

Darvish finished last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping them knock out the defending champion Cubs in the playoffs to reach the World Series.

For all the negative things that will be said about him this winter as teams try to carefully assess the risk in signing Darvish, it also should be said that he's an ace.

But Darvish was hit hard in the World Series against Houston, managing just five outs in each of his two starts - including a loss in Game 7 - and there was talk he was tipping his pitches. The following season, he got his second All-Star Game nod and was second in voting for Cy Young behind Max Scherzer. Perhaps this will set the wheels in motion for other free agent signings.
