A Russian fighter jet has been shot down in a rebel held area in north-eastern Syria's Idlib province, according to reports.

Syrians in rebel-held areas say they can distinguish between Russian warplanes and those of the Syrian air force, because the Russian planes fly at higher altitude.

He could not immediately confirm which faction had shot down the warplane but hardline opposition factions and the jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) are active in the area. The pilot managed to eject but was killed later while fighting against terrorists.

The Su-25 is a single-seat, twin-engine jet created to provide close air support for troops on the ground. One of the armed men shouts: 'He is Russian'.

The Russian center for reconciliation of warring sides in Syria has teamed up with Turkish counterparts, responsible for the Idlib de-escalation zone, trying to retrieve the Russian pilot's body, according to the ministry.

A third rebel source said he was killed.

Russian Federation is a key ally of President Bashar Assad, and has been waging a military campaign on behalf of his forces since 2015.

On November 19, the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group was flushed out of its last stronghold in Syria's Al-Bukamal.

Analyst Charles Lister said that the first footage of the plane going down was posted by a group affiliated with the Free Syrian Army. This plane was also carrying out raids there, ' said Abdel Rahman.

Syrian troops launched a fierce offensive on Idlib in late December, with backing by Russian warplanes. In believe that we are in a significant stage in the change toward peace and should make sure that the process led by the United Nations makes progress in Geneva, in a believable and serious way, he said.

Moscow began conducting air strikes in Syria in September 2015.
