SpaceX's Falcon Heavy completes hold-down firing test

SpaceX is planning to launch the first flight of its big new Falcon Heavy rocket "in a week or so", according to a tweet sent out by Elon Musk on Wednesday.

However, the tickets will be valid on the day of the launch of the first flight of the Falcon Heavy rocket. American Eastern Standard Time for about 10 seconds, spewing violent exhaust and steam, a video on SpaceX's official twitter showed.

SpaceX's new heavy-lift rocket Falcon Heavy completed its hold-down firing test at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday.

The Falcon Heavy launch comes just over four months after the billionaire entrepreneur outlined his vision for the establishment of a lunar base and a permanent Mars colony by 2022.

SpaceX plans to start building its first BFR by mid year.

Comprised of three reusable Falcon 9 rocket cores strapped together, the spacecraft is one of the most powerful ever made.

Following the successful test yesterday Musk suggested the rocket could be "launching in a week or so".

The sheer power of Falcon Heavy is eminently clear in this attractive capture by Tom Cross. It also has three times more engines. In comparison, the company's Falcon 9 rocket, used to launch Zuma and to deliver cargo to and from the International Space Station, only has nine engines.

He specified that it is the "no earlier than" date and that it could still change, but as of right now, it is the planned launch date. But Musk's confirmation gives us something to look forward to that's far more specific.

"I love the thought of a vehicle drifting apparently endlessly through space and perhaps being discovered by an alien race millions of years in the future", Musk wrote.

SpaceX is known for its lofty goals when it comes to timescales and its rocket launches, particularly when it comes to the Falcon Heavy.

Launch viewing tickets through Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex went on sale Thursday and quickly sold out for the closest "Feel the Heat" spots at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.
