Olaf holds daylong celebration for Martin Luther King Jr

Martin Luther King

As organizations gather throughout Southern Maryland to commemorate the January 15 birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the College of Southern Maryland is joining in the conversation and celebrations occurring locally January 14 and 15.

The congregation sang a hymn during the 31st annual Archdiocesan Community Wide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dubbed the "BithEnergy MLK Unity 5K", the event will be at 8 a.m. Saturday at Columbia Gateway Drive, and is in an effort to "unify the community" around the celebration of the civil rights movement, said Howard County Branch NAACP President Willie Flowers. The event is in collaboration with the Howard County Police Department and is co-sponsored by local companies BithEnergy and PRISM Compliance Management.

The law creates the first national historic park in the state of Georgia.

Other events throughout the weekend include the county's 33rd annual holiday program.

Baker said King was a friend to native peoples.

By doing so, he added, "we move closer to Dr. King's vision of living and working together as one community".

A youth oratorical contest and a concert at the Mosaic Templar's Cultural Center are among the events scheduled for the week leading up to Mega Kingfest on Monday, January 15, at the North Little Rock High School Performing Arts Center.

Dialogues: 4-5 p.m.

From 11 3 p.m., members of the campus community are invited to a poster-making session in the Buntrock Crossroads focused on the theme "To Engage and Empower".
