NFL, NFLPA launch formal investigation of Panthers' handling of Cam Newton injury

The Carolina Panthers have come under fire after quarterback Cam Newton returned to Sunday's game after seemingly being knocked out - without being put through the NFL's newly-enhanced concussion protocol.

The NFL and NFLPA determined the Panthers properly followed the protocol in that case. The Panthers punted after Anderson's incomplete pass on third down, and Newton appeared to be quickly cleared to play again following tests by the team's medical staff.

In Sunday's wild-card loss to the New Orleans Saints, Newton was hit hard by Saints defensive lineman David Onyemata with about nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. Newton attempted to walk off the hit, but instead sat down on the field near Carolina's sideline and... Medical personnel looked at him as a he took a seat, and Newton missed one play as Derek Anderson relieved him.

Newton finished the game as the Panthers lost, 31-26, at the Superdome and saw their season end.

Immediately after the game, which ended the Panthers' season, Newton and coach Ron Rivera maintained that Newton had been poked in the eye.

Newton said after the game the problem was with his eye, not a head injury.

A change in the National Football League concussion protocol enacted last month states: "A player who stumbles and/or falls to the ground when trying to stand, unrelated to an orthopedic injury, should be sent directly to the locker room to undergo the standard locker room exam". A sideline evaluation is not sufficient, under the modified rules.

The changes came in conjunction with a decision not to punish the Houston Texans for their handling of a concussion suffered by quarterback Tom Savage.

The organisation stipulates that any player suspected of having concussion must be evaluated in the dressing room.

"I hate that I couldn't do enough to get a win today for a lot of guys I think highly of", Newton said.

Newton spent time on the ground after the hit.

The Panthers' handling Sunday of Newton's injury drew criticism by Chris Nowinski, the founding CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation. "We romped him good".

"I was actually talking more to the other Kalil brother", Jordan said after the game.

"Yeah, you know, Carolina picked him up so the brothers could reunite", Jordan said.
