City blood stocks are desperate

Preliminary Total of M*A*S*H Blood Drive Donations

CLEVELAND- The American Red Cross is facing a winter blood shortage and is pleading for blood and platelet donations.

Severe winter weather has caused 150 blood drives to cancel, meaning over 5,500 blood and platelet donations go uncollected, the American Red Cross reported.

As members of the American Red Cross start the new year, they unfortunately face a hard time for blood collections during the challenging winter months.

Extreme winter weather, seasonal illnesses and the busy holiday season contributed to more than 28,000 fewer #blood donations in Nov. & Dec.

Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process.

All blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available for patients - especially platelet and type O negative and B negative donors. Currently, they say they have less than a one-day supply to serve patients in area hospitals. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Type AB: The plasma type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and can be donated through a platelet or plasma donation, where available, or during a regular blood donation. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells during a single donation, allowing them to maximize their impact.
