IED Returns To Kashmir Blast In Sopore Kills 4 Cops

Asserting that Sopore Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast was the first such attack after a gap of more than two years in the Valley, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, Muneer Khan said security agencies will devise a way to tackle this situation.

However no one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Jammu and Kashmir IGP Munir Khan told Greater Kashmir that three shops were also damaged.

The police official said that the IED was planted by terrorists with the help of their over Ground Wrker (OGW) near a shop. Authorities had deployed a large number of forces in the market and other areas of Sopore in the wake of the protest shutdown.

The separatist groups had called for a shutdown in Sopore area to commemorate the 25th anniversary of a fire incident in which they claimed 57 civilians were killed and several houses burned. "My deepest condolences to their families, [sic]" she said on Twitter.

After the blast, the government forces sealed entry and exit points of the town to nab the attackers.

He said constable Ghulam Nabi has aged parents, pregnant wife, four-year-old daughter Faheeqa Nabi, two brothers and two unmarried sisters. "The Shaheed Afzal Guru squad carried out the attack", he said.

This comes just days after two heavily armed militants stormed a CRPF camp in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, killing a personnel and leaving two others injured.
