Medical Council Will Benefit Profession JP Nadda

However, operation theatres, casualty and other emergency services will continue.

Healthcare services at outpatient departments (OPDs) of various private hospitals in the state are affected by the protest while emergency services are functioning normally, said a member of the MCI State unit.

The Bill seeks to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI), the apex body for the medical fraternity since 1934, and form a new National Medical Council. However, the doctors were wearing black bands as a mark of protest.

In Bengaluru, around 200 medical students under the Karnataka Medical Students and Youth Doctors Association gathered on Monday to hold a protest. "The IMA strongly opposes this Bill and has no option but to take the issues to our patients and the people".

The bill is likely to come up for discussion in parliament today.

The IMA, which has 2.77 lakh members, has labelled the Bill as anti-poor and anti-people, and said it makes the system prone to corruption.

While services at government hospitals will not be affected, the doctors will observe a "Black Day" and wear black arm bands as they see patients. "The lateral entry of non-MBBS doctors into the practice of modern medicine will gradually diminish the knowledge and significance of traditional medicine", said Chairman of National Medical Students Action Committee, IMA, Dr, Shiv Joshi in a statement.

Doctors pursuing Indian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, and homoeopathy may be allowed to practice allopathy after clearing a bridge course, according to a Bill introduced in the Lok Sabha. As per the reports, the government is bringing up the new bill today.

"We want the central government to reconsider the National Medical Commission Bill". Senior doctors from IMA are protesting another proposal of NMC which allows unrestricted fee in 60 per cent of medical seats in private medical colleges.

Tandon also said: "The NMC proposes two registers - one for the urban and the other for the ones who have undertaken the bridge course".
