Erica Garner, the 27-year-old daughter of Eric Garner who died when a police officer put him in a chokehold over illegally selling cigarettes, died Saturday due to complications from a heart attack.
Chokeholds are prohibited by the NYPD, and a ruling by the New York City medical examiner found Eric Garner died due to "compression of neck (choke hold)".
Erica's mother told the Daily News that her daughter's heart attack was brought on by an asthma attack. Donovan was the distict attorney when a grand jury declined to indict Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo in connection with her father's death. His obvious last words - "I can't relax!" Erica Garner became a voice for police accountability after his death, criticizing Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio over policing matters.
"Even with my own heartbreak, when I demand justice, it's never just for Eric Garner", she wrote in a Washington Post op-ed a year ago endorsing then-Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. She also set up the Garner Way Foundation in her father's honor, which she said she would use to "fight to engage communities all over the world in this struggle through, political awareness, music, arts, and community activism".
Her mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, said her daughter's cardiac arrest was triggered by an asthma attack and she had since been in a coma.
"I feel like a representative for people throughout this whole nation because I'm doing this".
"When you report this you recall that she was human: mother, little girl, sister, close relative".
A number of Black Lives Matter activists and prominent politicians have praised her life and fight over the past few days. He added that her family did not remove her from life support.
After news of Garner's death broke, many took to social media to pay tribute to her. All the same, the family was praying for miracles and asked the public to do the same. "A truth teller. As genuine and authentic of a soul you'll ever encounter", activist Shaun King wrote on Twitter. Her father didn't deserve this. "She was a warrior to the end".
When Erica Garner gave birth to a son in August, she named him after her father.
Garner has been in a coma since December 23, when an asthma attack triggered a second heart attack.
