Van Dijk will complete a move to Liverpool on January 1 after the club agreed a £75m deal to sign the Netherlands global from Southampton.

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has claimed that Sol Bamba is a better defender than new £75m Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk.

Warnock made the freakish comparison between the two ahead of Cardiff's game with Preston on Friday, and speaking to journalists, the former QPR manager outlined his reasons for such, as well as contradicting himself by admitting that he tried to sign Van Dijk in his time at Crystal Palace.

Calling for fans to allow time for Van Dijk to adapt, Klopp said: "Virgil hasn't had the best first half to the season at Southampton. I think van Dijk's is more confident on the ball and easier on the eye but I don't think he's better defensively", he told reporters.

"He is quality that is why we got him and that is why we were interested in him", said Klopp.

"I hope he's watching this morning that chief scout, £75 millio!"

What a wasted few months. For example, I saw Liverpool, one of their worst displays, against Spurs a few weeks ago when they were well beaten. And I don't think this will stop.

While most of the arguments around the transfer were based on the huge fee, valid points were raised on the question marks over van Dijk's attitude and the fact that it can be perceived to be something of a desperation move from Jurgen Klopp to turn out his pockets in order to try to solve his defensive woes.

With no disrespect to Sol Bamba, these comments regarding the world-record transfer are surely the most controversial to date.

When Van Dijk is fit, the defender dominates in the air, cuts out danger in the penalty area with superb instincts and is adept when it comes to timing tackles.
