'Gaming Disorder' proposed as an addiction by the World Health Organization

Gaming disorder to be named a mental health condition for the first time

- Some of you may have had video games under your Christmas tree, but be careful. "However, in certain circumstances overuse can lead to adverse effects", Poznyak was quoted as saying by the Independent. A draft of the 2018 edition of their diagnostic manual features gaming disorder listed alongside gambling disorder as conditions "due to addictive behaviours".

Gamers compulsively play to the exclusion of other interests and their persistent gaming appears to endanger their academic or job functioning, the APA had said. "I love Pokémon", he said.

He said: "Use of the internet, computers, smartphones and other electronic devices has dramatically increased over recent decades and health problems as a result of excessive use have also been documented".

In its current draft of the latest edition of the International Classification of Diseases, the World Health Organization defines the disorder as a recurring behavior pattern that significantly impairs a person's personal, social and work life. It is unclear if symptoms that involve problematic video gaming behavior should be reified as a new disorder, or are the expression of underlying mental conditions.

Of course, the topic of gaming behavior being a mental health condition raises a number of issues, particularly for the gaming industry, which would likely be against such a classification. For nearly 30 years people's lifestyles have changed and that includes the growth of gaming in most people's lives.

"It becomes obsessive. People will stop doing life in general".

"If someone isn't taking care of their body, if someone isn't eating well, if someone is having mood swings and getting anxious or they feel like they're dependent, if they're not using the game or around the game they feel an emptiness", said Kjome. "It's like some people like riding bikes forever", said Medrano.

This isn't a particularly new realization, as there have been rehab centers for gaming addiction founded in the past.
