China 'Caught Red Handed' Giving North Korea Oil

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, citing government sources in Seoul, reported earlier this week that U.S. satellites had spotted Chinese ships selling oil to North Korean vessels dozens of times since October.

"We urge China to end all economic ties with the DPRK, including tourism, and the provision of any oil or petroleum products, and expel all DPRK workers", he said, using the acronym for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The U.S. Treasury Department placed six North Korean shipping and trading companies and 20 of their ships on sanctions list on November 21, when it published spy satellite images taken on October 19 showing a ship named Ryesonggang 1 connected to a Chinese vessel.

President Donald Trump is reminding the world that he's long warned about the dangers posed by North Korea's nuclear program.

China accounts for the vast majority of North Korea's external trade and oil supplies.

"Caught RED HANDED - very disappointed that China is allowing oil to go into North Korea", Trump tweeted.

The same photos released at the time were used by South Korean outlets in recent reports.

China's foreign ministry has defended its enforcement of United Nations sanctions against North Korea.

The Treasury statement came alongside the announcement of a series of sanctions against a range of North Korean entities and individuals.

The UN resolution seeks to ban almost 90 per cent of refined petroleum exports to North Korea by capping them at 500,000 barrels a year. A government source said, "We need to focus on the fact that the illicit trade started after a UN Security Council resolution in September drastically capped North Korea's imports of refined petroleum products".

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said she had no information following Chosun's report, but said "the Chinese government has been completely and strictly enforcing Security Council resolutions" aimed at discouraging North Korea from developing nuclear and missile technology.

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on that report.

"China has applied certain import bans and sanctions, but it could and should do more", he wrote in The New York Times.
